History[edit]

Boris FX was founded in 1995 by Boris Yamnitsky. The former Media 100 engineer (a member of the original Media 100 NLE NAB launch team in 1993) released “Boris FX,” the first plug-in based digital video effects (DVE) for Adobe Premiere and Media 100, in 1995.[1] The plug-in won Best of Show at Apple Macworld in Boston, MA the same year.
Continuum[edit]
The initial “Boris FX” DVE plug-in created in 1995 has continued to be developed over the years. The product was renamed Boris Continuum Complete (BCC) in 2001 and was most recently rebranded as Continuum. Various Boris Continuum versions were bundled with Avid Media Composer since 2004. Since 2014, a limited Boris Continuum Lite version is bundled with Avid Media Composer subscription options.
In October 2015, Boris FX released Continuum (v10), the first product release since the Imagineer Systems acquisition. Continuum (v10) introduced integrated Mocha planar tracking and masking tools into the collection. In October 2017, the company released Continuum (v11), which includes Academy Award-nominated Primatte tech, and a new 360/VR Unit for editing tasks.
Particle Illusion[edit]
As part of the merger with GenArts in 2016, Boris FX acquired the rights to the Particle Illusion (formerly particleIllusion) product, a storied particle system from the original developer Alan Lorence, the founder of Wondertouch.[2] In 2018, Boris FX released a redesigned version of the product to a larger NLE/compositing market as part of Continuum (2019).[3] The new Particle Illusion plug-in supports Adobe, Avid, and many OFX hosts.
Final Effects Complete[edit]
In June 2005, Boris FX expanded its product line by acquiring Final Effects Complete from the Israeli software company Optibase.[4] Final Effects Complete, featuring over 100 VFX plug-ins is available as a separate package for Adobe After Effects, Premiere Pro, and Avid Media Composer.
Media 100[edit]
In October 2005, Yamnitsky acquired Media 100 from the employer that launched his plug-in career.[5] Boris FX had a long relationship with Media 100 which bundled Boris RED software as its main titling and compositing solution. Media 100’s video editing software is now available free to Mac OS users.[6]
Mocha[edit]
In December 2014, Boris FX merged with Imagineer Systems,[7] the UK-based developer of the Academy Award-winning planar motion tracking software, Mocha Pro.[8] Mocha Pro’s features include planar tracking (motion tracking), rotoscoping, image stabilization, 3D camera tracking, and object removal. In June 2016, Mocha released (v5) which introduced Mocha Pro’s tools as plug-ins for Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer, and OFX hosts The Foundry’s NUKE, Blackmagic Design Fusion, Magix VEGAS Pro, and HitFilm for the first-time.
Mocha’s product line also includes a lite-version of Mocha bundled with Adobe After Effects Creative Cloud known as Mocha AE. Mocha AE has been included with every version of After Effects since CS4. The lite-version of Mocha is also bundled with HitFilm Pro from FXHome. Mocha’s tracking SDK (software developers kit) is also licensed to other VFX products including SAM Quantel Pablo Rio, Silhouette FX, CoreMelt, and Motion VFX. In February 2017, Boris FX launched Mocha VR, based on Mocha’s planar tracking and masking tools. Mocha VR is the first 360-optimized plug-in for Adobe After Effects, Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer. and OFX Hosts: Nuke, Fusion & Vegas Pro.
Mocha Pro has been used on major films and television shows including Birdman,[9]Black Swan, the Harry Potter series,[10]The Hobbit, and Star Wars.
Sapphire[edit]
In September 2016, Boris FX merged with former competitor, GenArts, developer of Sapphire high-end visual effects plug-ins.[2] In March 2017, Sapphire released eight individual Sapphire Units based on separate effect categories. In October 2017, Boris FX released its first new version of Sapphire since the GenArts acquisition. Sapphire (v11) now includes integrated Mocha tracking and masking tools. Sapphire is available for Adobe, Avid, the Autodesk Flame family, and OFX hosts including BlackmagicDaVinci Resolve and Fusion, and The Foundry’s NUKE. As part of the merger, Boris FX acquired the rights to Particle Illusion – a storied particle system from the original developer Wondertouch. In 2018, Boris FX announced the reintroduction of the product to the larger NLE/Compositing market.[11]
Sapphire’s plug-ins have been used on major films including Avatar,[12] the Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Iron Man,[13]The Lord of the Rings,[14]The Matrix trilogy, Titanic,[15] and X-Men.

- I just got the same thing. That has never happened to me before.

- Boris continuum 10 is running without problems after updating to Hitfilm 7 here.I got problems with Boris when installing Hitfilm 2017 last year - download the lastest version from Boris, uninstall and install new and it worked.
- @Juda1 The Boris bundled with Hitfilm 6 or 7 is Boris 11, 3D objects unit. The Boris bundled with Hitfilm only works in Hitfilm by design. If you install a separate Boris then that is something different.

yup , un-installed 6.x version , and installed the new 7.x version . Boris , in the Viewer says that : 'Boris is in Trial mode' please call the 1-888- number to purchase a License . The UI option in the EFFECTS plugin is now gone . No way to launch it .Boris Title Studio does open , but it is still in Trial Mode .or , go back to version 6.x - One to add here: even it is possible to open Title Studio in trial mode it is very slow on my iMac 5K Late 2015 / Radeon M395, 24GB - I would say it is basically unusable. It looks to me that the bundled Boris is not working correctly with latest Hitfilm Pro update.
- Hello everyone. We are aware of this problem and currently BorixFX are investigating it as a high priority issue. We will release an update to HitFilm as soon as we can. Please accept our apologies. Thank you very much for your patience.
- Thanks for the update, Cedric. Meanwhile I can play with the new features of HF :-)
- @CedricBonnier just for funsies, my guess it Boris is as surprised as the rest of us at a three month full-version update, and it's just the Boris add-ons being version keyed for Hitfilm 6.xx
- @CedricBonnier Try to get Boris to deal with the Title Studio bug that has been there since day one in Hitfilm. Back to Boris 10 in Hitfilm 2017. It's still there in Hitfilm 6/7 with Boris 11.
- edited February 2018looks like Boris Title Studio has been re-worked ? . says version 11.01.1819. 2017-11-7 despite the version and date , Title Studio UI looks different then it did with HFP version 6.x did a quick Boris text Render . yup , the video is water marked with 'Trial mode' text . just checking .
- edited February 2018Same. Re-doing my text using the regular text plugin in the meantime. Thanks for working on it, y'all!- Winter!EDIT:I am blessed that my text is just over the middle of the screen and over one clip each in this case, so I have a workaround:A. Duplicate bottom clip and put on top (so you can't see text)B. Make said clip a composite shot and draw a mask around top thirdC. When you go back to the timeline it has covered the error message.Quick workaround in case anyone else is in a jam.God Bless - Winter!

- Hi, I've read about a problem I'm having regrading Boris FXwith HitFilm Pro. It's saying it's in a trail mode and don't work.I've download the latest update - but still.I've read in the forum that the issue is known to the developer team.Just wondering what's about it?Thanks.
- edited February 2018To quote Cedric Bonnier above:'Hello everyone. We are aware of this problem and currently BorixFX are investigating it as a high priority issue. We will release an update to HitFilm as soon as we can. Please accept our apologies. Thank you very much for your patience.'From this we know that there's a high probability the issue is at the Boris end. The devs are working on it. A patch will be released when it's done. In the meantime I've merged your thread with this existing thread, because we don't need two threads for this same topic. :-)
- Just a quick update: HitFilm Pro version 7.1 was released today to address this issue. Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience. You can find the latest installers on the what's new page: https://hitfilm.com/hitfilm-pro/whats-new/
- I've no idea what i have done but i just bought vegas pro and some boris continuum thing came with it, but it just says trial mode in the browser. i have some license key i clicked through to get from the vegas pro email. it claims its activated. does the fx browser show other things i am not licensed for? If so how do i remove it since the things i dont have i dont need to see.
- @terraslate I'm not entirely certain what you're asking, so here's answers to multiple questions. If you are asking how to alter the Hitfilm Pro Effects Panel to not show certain installed OpenFX plug ins, Hitfilm does not have this functionality. If you're asking about how things are listed in the Vegas Pro FX Browser, the question is more appropriate for Magix's Vegas forum. If you are having difficulty activating the Boris FX Keying unit, the question is better asked of Boris FX.
